Connecticut is the No. 18  growth state in America, according to 2021 transactional data compiled for the annual U-Haul Growth Index.

Every year, U-Haul provides a comprehensive report on where people migrate to in the United States using their geographical coverage from over 23,000 U-haul vehicles. As the pandemic has continued to affect the migration patterns of Americans, U-haul reported they had had a historically increased demand for one-way moving assistance in 2021. 

Growth states are calculated by the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering a state versus leaving that state in a calendar year. Migration trends data is compiled from well over 2 million one-way U-Haul truck customer transactions annually. Out of those 2 million transactions in 2021, Connecticut was the #18 on the official U-Haul list of growth states. This is a dramatic increase from Connecticut’s 2020 ranking of #43 on the list, establishing its mark as a flourishing destination.

Although the surrounding states of New York and Massachusetts saw significant net losses, Connecticut was able to climb 25 spots during 2021. Connecticut’s top growth cities include Stamford, Danbury, Shelton, Norwalk, and Milford.

Coastal areas have seen increased migration on both coasts, with Texas coming in at #1 on the growth index list. Other nearby states have also seen significant growth rate jumps, with Maine rising 21 spots and  Vermont rising 14 spots.
